The Broadway world is in mourning after the untimely passing of one of its shining stars.
Bret Hanna-Shuford, a talented actor known for his performances in iconic productions such as The Little Mermaid and Wicked, has tragically died at the age of 46. His husband, Stephen Hanna-Shuford, revealed that Bret had been battling two severe health issues: Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and T-Cell Lymphoma, with his passing occurring just months after his diagnosis.
On January 3, Stephen took to their shared Instagram account, Broadway Husbands, to share a heartfelt message about Bret’s passing. "It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that early this morning we said goodbye to the most amazing man, husband, and Papa in the universe," he wrote, emphasizing the profound love and connection they shared. He expressed, "Bret Hanna-Shuford left this world peacefully, surrounded by love and family. Our hearts are broken, but we will continue to make him proud of us."
The outpouring of grief from the theater community was palpable, with many colleagues expressing their sorrow in the comments section of Stephen's post. Lindsay Mendez, known for her role in Merrily We Roll Along, stated, "This is devastating beyond words. Sending prayers, love, and light, & holding you and yours close in our hearts." Meanwhile, Jennifer Simard, from Death Becomes Her, offered comforting thoughts, saying, "I hope our collective consciousness is a small comfort to you at this time. Loving you." Megan Fairchild from the New York City Ballet added her disbelief and support, remarking, "Stephen, I can’t even believe this… we love you all so much. You are in our thoughts and prayers. You guys have had so much spirit and optimism; it was hard to imagine this was really possible."
Busy Philipps also extended her condolences, acknowledging the incredible impact that both Bret and Stephen had on those around them. "This news is absolutely heartbreaking, and I’m so sorry for your loss. You both have brought such light and beauty and hilarity into the world, and I’m just sending you and your family so much love and my deepest condolences."
Previously, Bret and Stephen had shared their journey regarding his HLH and T-Cell Lymphoma diagnosis, which they described as "a rare and life-threatening immune condition." They candidly discussed the long and challenging road ahead, stating, "After many weeks of uncertainty, misdiagnoses, and countless medical visits, Bret finally has answers—but the road ahead will be long and challenging." They had set up a GoFundMe page in August to help cover medical expenses, highlighting how this diagnosis required Bret to put many of his dreams on hold.
The couple reflected on the harsh reality of their situation, noting, "What should have been a season of new beginnings has instead turned into an unexpected battle for health and stability." They called on their community to support them during this difficult time, emphasizing the love, creativity, and positivity that they have always strived to bring into the world.
Beyond his significant roles on Broadway, Bret also made appearances on television shows like Only Murders in the Building, The Wolf of Wall Street, and All My Children, showcasing his versatility as a performer.
