Dumplings and Diplomacy: A Celebration of Culture
KUALA LUMPUR: The atmosphere at the Chinese Embassy was vibrant with laughter, traditional melodies, and the delightful scent of freshly steamed dumplings as it hosted an open day in honor of the Spring Festival, a celebration rich in culture, exchange, and friendship.
Around 200 attendees, including government officials and students from institutions such as Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), and Universiti Putra Malaysia, were welcomed to explore the embassy grounds and engage in hands-on activities that highlighted various aspects of Chinese cultural heritage.
Guests started their journey by watching informative videos that illustrated the embassy's functions and China's remarkable developmental progress, showcasing both past accomplishments and future goals.
Following this introduction, they participated in a series of cultural workshops and interactive sessions designed to immerse them in Chinese traditions. Under the guidance of embassy personnel, the visitors enjoyed making wind chimes, assembling miniature wooden rattle drums, and creating brass rubbings on paper—an ancient method used to replicate historical inscriptions and art.
The highlight of the day included dumpling-making workshops and festive games such as the prosperity toss and pitch-pot, where participants had the chance to win exciting prizes.
One of the standout attractions was the hanfu experience, where students eagerly lined up to don traditional Chinese garments, capturing the moment with their smartphones.
In his speech, Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing noted the significance of holding the open day as the Lunar New Year approached. "The Spring Festival represents reunion, joy, and renewal," he stated, emphasizing that it is not only the pinnacle of traditional celebrations in Chinese culture but also an event gaining recognition worldwide.
Ouyang shared a personal reflection, mentioning that the forthcoming Year of the Horse marks his sixth Spring Festival celebrated in Malaysia. "Every year during this period, Kuala Lumpur's streets buzz with a festive spirit that makes me feel very much at home," he expressed, highlighting how the occasion exemplifies Malaysia's multicultural nature and the strong connections between the two nations.
As he conveyed early greetings for the upcoming Chinese New Year, he wished everyone prosperity and happiness in the Year of the Horse.
Turning to the topic of bilateral relations, Ouyang pointed out that 2025 would be a pivotal year for Malaysia-China ties, with heightened high-level exchanges expected to further bolster political trust, enhance practical cooperation, and strengthen people-to-people interactions.
Looking forward, he encouraged the younger generation, saying, "The future is in your hands. I hope you will embrace the opportunities presented to you and collaborate with young individuals from other countries, including China, to foster a more peaceful, prosperous, and inclusive world."
Among the distinguished guests were Brig-Jen Datuk Mohamad Norlizam Shamsuddin, commandant of Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia’s Military Training Camp, deputy commandant Kol Zam Azhari Zainudin, and other officials.
Waffi Izzuddin, a 22-year-old representative from IIUM, remarked that for many students, this event marked their first visit to a foreign embassy.
Seventy students from IIUM attended the open day, primarily political science majors. Waffi noted, "This experience is incredibly valuable for us, particularly in grasping regional geopolitics," adding that the embassy's approach was welcoming and engaging.
"We hope to see more opportunities for interaction in the future, like forums or discussion sessions, where we can delve deeper into our inquiries."
