In a surprising turn of events, Australian sprinting prodigy Gout Gout has chosen to sit out the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. This bold decision comes from the 18-year-old athlete as he shifts his focus toward the world under-20 championships scheduled for August, where he aims to follow in the footsteps of the iconic Usain Bolt.
Both events will occur within close proximity, and Gout, along with his dedicated support team, believes that competing in both at this early stage of his promising career may not be the wisest choice. “It is [a big decision],” Gout shared with the Seven Network. “[The Commonwealth Games] is a fantastic event and one that everyone looks forward to. But when I evaluate my options, it makes more sense to aim for the world under-20s.”
The world under-20 championships, previously known as the world junior championships, will unfold from August 5 to 9 in Eugene, Oregon, at the same venue that hosted the 2022 world championships. Bolt himself initiated his legendary sprinting journey by securing gold in the 200 meters at the 2002 world juniors, a milestone Gout aspires to replicate. Having finished second in the half-lap event during the world under-20 championships in Lima at just 16 years old, Gout has often expressed his desire to mirror Bolt’s extraordinary achievements.
Considered a strong contender for a medal in the 100 meters at the Commonwealth Games, Gout's absence will undoubtedly impact both the Australian team and the competition overall. Petria Thomas, the chef de mission for Australia’s Commonwealth Games team, acknowledged the significance of Gout's choice. "Gout is an extraordinary talent, and while we will miss him in Glasgow, we look forward to seeing him wear the green and gold at future Commonwealth Games," Thomas remarked.
She further emphasized, "Let’s not forget he’s only 18 and is still on the rise. His future is bright, and we respect his decision to prioritize the world under-20 championships as he builds towards the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games."
Moreover, Australian Athletics has voiced its support for Gout’s decision to concentrate on the junior championships. The Queensland native has rapidly become a beloved figure in the athletics world after making a significant impact in the past two years. Notably, he shattered Peter Norman’s 56-year-old 200-meter Australian record in late 2024 and made headlines in 2025 with his debut at the world championships, where he reached the semi-finals in Japan.
