DALLAS -- In a thrilling mid-week encounter, the Buffalo Sabres secured a 4-1 victory over the Dallas Stars, extending their winning streak to an impressive 10 games. This achievement not only matches the franchise record but also surpasses the NHL's longest winning streak this season, a feat previously accomplished by the Colorado Avalanche in November.
The Sabres' offensive prowess was showcased by Tage Thompson, who scored twice within a span of 2½ minutes in the third period, showcasing his exceptional goal-scoring abilities. Thompson's performance was further highlighted by his assist, contributing to the team's overall success.
Adding to the Sabres' triumph, Josh Doan and defenseman Bowen Byram each recorded a goal and an assist. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, the Sabres' goalie, demonstrated his prowess with 28 saves, allowing only one goal in each of the games during the streak.
The Dallas Stars, despite their second position in the overall NHL standings, faced a setback as their six-game point streak was snapped (4-0-2). Casey DeSmith, the Stars' goalie, encountered a loss in regulation for the first time since his season debut on October 16, ending a franchise-record 13-game point streak (9-0-4).
The turning point of the game came when Bowen Byram's goal with 2:55 left in the second period broke the 1-1 tie, setting the stage for the Sabres' eventual victory.
Mavrik Bourque, the Stars' player, scored a rebound just 15 seconds into the game's opening shift, marking two of his six goals this season in the past four games.
The Sabres' dominance extended to their road winning streak, which now stands at seven games, the longest in the league this season. During this streak, Buffalo has maintained a strong lead after the second period, leading eight times and tying twice.
Tage Thompson's performance was particularly notable as he provided the Sabres with a two-goal lead at 9:21 in the third period and scored again with 8:25 left, achieving his team-high 20th goal.
Despite the Sabres' success, there was a concern as Alex Lyon, their goalie, returned to Buffalo for further evaluation after sustaining a lower-body injury during the team's win over St. Louis on Monday.
