Toprak Razgatlioglu, a three-time World Superbike champion, has joined the Pramac team, creating a buzz in the MotoGP community. With his impressive track record, he's certainly a force to be reckoned with. But here's where it gets controversial: despite his success, Razgatlioglu is cautious about his expectations for the 2026 season.
His manager, Kenan Sofuoglu, has set the bar high, aiming for Razgatlioglu to challenge the likes of 2021 MotoGP champion Fabio Quartararo within the Yamaha team. However, Razgatlioglu himself is taking a more realistic approach, acknowledging that it might take until 2027 for him to truly fight for a podium finish.
"2026 is all about learning for me," he says. "I need to adapt to the bike, learn new tracks, and understand the limits. It's a massive challenge, but I'm determined to give it my all."
And this is the part most people miss: the transition from World Superbikes to MotoGP is no easy feat. Razgatlioglu is switching from the BMW M1000R to Yamaha's V4-powered M1, a significant upgrade in terms of power and performance. Add to that the switch from Pirelli to Michelin tyres, and you've got a recipe for a steep learning curve.
"The straight-line speed of the M1 prototype surprised me," Razgatlioglu admits. "It's a completely different beast compared to what I'm used to. I need time to adapt and learn the limits, especially with the tyres."
But here's the silver lining: Razgatlioglu has had two opportunities to get familiar with Yamaha's MotoGP bike at the end of 2025, giving him a head start. And with Pirelli becoming the official tyre supplier in 2027, he might just find his groove sooner than expected.
