The weight-loss drug market is about to get a shake-up! 🌊
Wegovy, a popular weight-loss medication, is now available in a new form: a daily pill, offering an alternative to the weekly injection. This change could be a game-changer for many Americans seeking a more convenient and potentially more affordable option.
But here's the catch: the price varies. The 1.5 mg starter dose is $149 per month, thanks to a deal with the Trump administration. However, higher doses can cost up to $299 monthly. This pricing strategy might raise some eyebrows, especially considering the original injection's price tag of $349 per month.
And this is where it gets interesting: Wegovy isn't the only player in town. Eli Lilly, a rival pharmaceutical company, is developing a similar oral medication called orforglipron. It's expected to be approved soon and will also be priced at $149 initially, with higher doses costing more. But will it be as effective as Wegovy?
Clinical trials show promising results for both. Wegovy's pill demonstrated an average weight loss of 14% over 64 weeks, while orforglipron showed 11% weight loss over 72 weeks on its highest dose. But these medications aren't without side effects. Gastrointestinal issues like nausea are common, and some patients in the trials had to stop treatment due to these side effects.
The key difference? Wegovy must be taken on an empty stomach, while orforglipron can be taken anytime. This might be a deciding factor for many patients.
So, which one will reign supreme in the weight-loss market? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: the battle for the top spot is heating up, and patients now have more options to choose from.
