On a fateful Thursday, two hikers witnessed a mountain lion near a person on the ground, sparking immediate concern. The hikers took swift action, throwing rocks to scare the animal away and attempting to provide aid. One of the hikers, a physician, attended to the victim but sadly found no pulse.
The identity of the victim and the official cause of death will be released by the Larimer County coroner. In the aftermath, wildlife officers located and euthanized two mountain lions in the area, a necessary measure to ensure public safety according to CPW policies.
But here's where it gets controversial: while mountain lion sightings are common in this forested region, there have been no recent documented attacks on humans. In fact, fatal attacks by mountain lions in Colorado are incredibly rare, with the last one occurring over 25 years ago.
"This is an area where mountain lions are really common, along with other wildlife like bears and moose," explained CPW spokesperson Kara Van Hoose. "We do expect conflicts, but this incident is a reminder of the importance of being vigilant and prepared."
